I have made a groundbreaking discovery. Self-promotion is NOT a dirty word!

I have always wrestled with this. It’s not that I’m not aware of what I’m good at– I’m pretty self-reflective– it’s just that unless explicitly asked, I’m not going to tell you about it. This aversion to tooting my own horn has held me back throughout my life. Seriously, who’s going to tell you how amazing I am if I don’t? (I kid! A little.)

Though I am not trying to take myself to Donna Meagle and Tom Haverford levels (seriously, I can’t believe this is the last season of Parks and Recreation. ), I am taking the time to promote myself and my business and treat my doggone self to success!

Daily Worth is self-described as “the leading financial media company for women.” After stumbling on to the website right before the close of the year, I’m willing to believe them. If you’re not reading Daily Worth every day, then you’re missing out on some truly insightful content.

When I found this amazing article, 6 Steps to Embracing Self-Promotion, I knew it would be wrong to keep it to myself. Here’s the rundown:

Change Your Thinking: Gotta get that mind right.

Be Yourself: You know what they say about everyone else already being taken.

Find the Right Audience: You can say all you want, but it matters not a bit if you’re talking to the wrong folks.

Focus on Your Why: When it’s real to you, it will be real to others.

Know Your Value: You is smart, you is kind, you is important. KNOW it. OWN it. Don’t let yourself or anyone else steal your shine.

Give, Then Ask: Show your heart. Provide value. Then when it’s time to make the sale, you’ll have no problems going for it.

Read the full article now, read the rest of the entire website later.

Hat tip to the Daily Worth for the list.

What are your self-promotion struggles?

It would not be genuine of me to publish a “New Year, New You” post anytime remotely close to the new year. I prefer to be casually and fashionably late to the party, rolling in about a week late. 2014 was a building year for me, meaning that I am not stopping there….I’m doing 2015 differently.

I did a lot of work to build my beauti (will that ever get old?) business last year– my team grew and I met and worked with amazing women but overall, I left 2014 feeling extra “meh.”

¯_(ツ)_/¯

But NOW! 2015! New! Shiny! Boom!

I’m searching for office space! My BeautiControl team is growing and growing and growing and we NEED SOME SPACE. The goal is to have a space where we can have meetings and do spas and makeovers and have some pretty solid parties. Because if my business means nothing else to me, it means fun.

This year, I’m destroying the walls of my comfort zone. I mean, I’m tearing stuff DOWN. Those who know me in real life are often surprised to hear me say this, but I am absolutely more introverted than extroverted. It takes a bit to get me warmed up to a “bunch of people” situation and my lack of comfort can sometimes read as “standoffish.” Sorry ’bout it. But I am working on it.

Focus on building that business! There are so many good resources out there for small business owners and I’m not keeping them to myself, I’m going to be sharing them with you!

2015 is a team growing year! I have benefited from having this business and I’m trying to share this opportunity with as many women as I can. I made a bold, audacious goal for moving up in leadership this year…I’m not quite ready to reveal it yet but soon, my friends, very soon.

And because I’m not above a cliché, I’m dropping a little inspiration music for y’all….anyone ready for a little Katy Perry?!

I’m excited for 2015! What are your goals for this year?

One of the most important things about going into business for yourself is determining your brand. BeautiControl is an amazing company with a lot of amazing collateral materials but it is SOO important that you create a look for yourself outside of the company. In the long run, people are buying YOU.

I designed these cards with my mother and her personality in mind. She’s now an Executive Director with BeautiControl now (more on that in another post!) and it would not be an understatement to say that she is one of the busiest women alive. The card needs to be flexible yet specific– highlighting her business as well as leaving it all open to interpretation.

What do you need in a business card?
